Stable: Rouge Mountain Stables
Country: USA
Horse: RMS Smoke N' Gun
Handlers: Amelia Shepard
Class: Ranch Remuda Challenge

The Ranch Remuda Challenge was a highlight of the competition. It combined reining, cow sense, roping, and overall control and versatility of the horse. Amelia was confident Gunner had what it takes to pull this off. To be honest though, she hadn't done much practice with him at all. Gunner has competed in similar events separately but never been asked for it all at once. He was a great boy though, so everyone had high hopes for the pair.

Amelia ran through the given pattern in her head and she walked Gunner up to the gate. As the work crew opened it up she smiled and thanked them, guiding her stallion calmly into the arena. Gunner had his ears forward ready to work and as Amelia squeezed he moved out at a steady lope. They performed circles first, extending, collecting, and flying lead changes all blended together. Then quietly they stopped in the middle of the arena to perform their spins. Amelia sat deep into the saddle and draped the reins to one side, bumping her outside calf to cue her mount. Gunner obliged and turned quickly, jolting to a stop after three and a half turns. The same was repeated the other direction with ease. At this point they were ready for the run downs. They flew down the arena into a sliding stop, leaving a nice set of tracks behind them. Gunner stood back up and waited calmly for a second before turning over on his haunches and running right back in his tracks. They performed another set just the same before the final run down. For some reason Gunner seemed to put even more power into this run, pushing forward with all his tall body could. He sunk down deep and slid across the dirt only to immediately fly backwards in reverse.

The reining pattern went so smoothly, as it should with Gunner. He may not be built like most reiners, short and stacked, but he did a pretty darn good job at it. The shutes opened then, letting a yearling calf into the arena. Gunner's interest was piqued at this and he gladly moved forward to chase it down. Though this wasn't cutting really, they had to keep the calf boxed for a short while then push it down the rail and show their control over the calf's movement. Gunner got low and the catty side of him shined through, he kept that bright orange calf right in front of him. At one point it tried to bolt down the rail before they were supposed to and Gunner was quick to chase and bring it right on back. When they finally let the calf move out it was ready to run. Gunner kept right at the calf's side and pushed it up the rail one way, spun it around, and back down the other. The calf was a quick one, really pushing to get away and tried a few times to run off a different direction and they had to compensate to keep it in line.

Finally Amelia pulled out the rope and loosened it up to get ready to rope. She hadn't always been the best roper so she hoped she could pull it off today. The calf turned and ran straight down the arena giving them the perfect line to rope it. Gunner was great at rating a cow too, making it a shame he wasn't really used for roping competitions instead of just ranch work back home. Amelia got ready and took aim, shooting the rope out towards the calf and praying she'd make it. The line caught half of the calf's head and for a split second Amelia's gut sank, but in a twist out of nowhere somehow the loop slipped down and suddenly tightened up like it should have. Amelia came flying off of Gunner, dirt shooting everywhere. Gunner pulled back, keeping the line tight and doing his darn best. Amelia ran up and grabbed the calf, flanking him and ending their run.

It was a wild couple minutes at the end with the cow work. There were a few bumps that Amelia hoped wouldn't affect the judging too much, they just drew a little bit more wild of a calf this time instead of a few of the other competitors she had watched. She walked back to Gunner and slipped the line lose and patted his neck. They were both hot and sweaty from the run and all the lights but Amelia was thoroughly pleased. She mounted back up and let Gunner meander back towards the gate at his own pace while she wiped her face off. Overall she thought it was a great run, and the cheering she heard from the crowd helped solidify her thoughts. She could hear a roar go up during each of her slidns and then again when she roped that calf and that was a feeling she couldn't describe.
